Foggy Bottom covers the western part of downtown Washington, D.C., between the White House area and the Potomac River. It is one of the city’s older neighbourhoods, and its streets follow the L'Enfant plan, in which broad diagonal avenues slice across a regular grid. From above, those diagonals and the circles where they meet give the district a strong geometric character.
The campus of George Washington University takes up much of the neighbourhood, with buildings and quads filling several blocks. The Kennedy Center and the Watergate complex stand along the river. The State Department’s headquarters is here too, which is why Foggy Bottom is often used as shorthand for American diplomacy. Washington Circle marks the northwestern corner.
A Foggy Bottom map poster sets the grid, the diagonals of Virginia and New Hampshire Avenues, the waterfront parkways and the curve of the Potomac in a single frame. The Theodore Roosevelt Bridge and the edge of Rock Creek add further structure. The composition is compact and dense, with a strong sense of place, and it suits a large print.

The river curves along the western edge, lined by parkways, the Kennedy Center and the Watergate, with the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge reaching across to Virginia.
