Gaithersburg lies northwest of Washington, D.C., along Interstate 270 in Montgomery County. On the map it combines several layers: a small historic town that grew up around the railroad, winding postwar suburban streets, and large campuses of research and technology employers along the highway.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology has its headquarters here on a large wooded campus. The city also holds a small International Latitude Observatory, built in 1899 and one of a handful worldwide used to track the wobble of Earth's axis.
