Ghardaïa is the principal town of the M'zab Valley in the northern Algerian Sahara, one of a group of five fortified settlements founded by the Mozabites from the eleventh century onward. The valley was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, recognised for an urban form that has changed remarkably little across the centuries since its foundation.
Seen from above, each ksar is built on a rocky rise, its houses packed in concentric layers around a mosque at the summit. Lanes wind upward in tight curves, producing a pattern closer to a fingerprint than a grid. Between the towns, palm groves follow the course of the Oued M'zab, a wadi that stays dry for most of the year.
The architecture of the valley influenced modern architects, Le Corbusier among them, who admired its economy of form. A Ghardaïa map poster shows the old cores beside the newer districts that have spread across the valley floor and the surrounding plateau, the contrast between organic lanes and later straight roads becoming especially clear in black and white.
The ksour each form a rounded cluster of tightly packed lanes climbing a hill, a shape repeated along the valley and instantly recognisable on the map.
The seasonal riverbed threads between the settlements, lined by palm groves and irrigated gardens that appear as softer, open patches amid the dense building.
A short distance from Ghardaïa, the walled town of Beni Isguen keeps a particularly clear outline, its boundary and inner lanes forming a compact, self-contained shape.

Few urban forms are as distinctive from above as the M'zab Valley. Architects, travellers and anyone with roots in the region often find the tight, rounded patterns of the ksour as striking on paper as they are in person.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with the date of a visit, and choose between Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Sand suits the desert setting well, though every style keeps the lanes crisp at all six print sizes.
