Ghazni lies on a high plateau in eastern Afghanistan, more than two thousand metres above sea level. The old town is gathered at the foot of a large citadel, and from above the fortress stands out as a solid shape with a close web of lanes around it. Walled compounds and orchards spread out from there in blocks of green and open ground.
The main highway between Kabul and Kandahar passes the city, and its long straight line contrasts with the uneven old quarters. The Ghazni River and the irrigation channels drawn from it run through the farmland, bringing water to the walled gardens. Dry hills and open plains surround the settlement on every side.
A thousand years ago Ghazni was the capital of the Ghaznavid dynasty, whose rule reached from Central Asia into northern India. Two tall brick minarets from that era still stand on the plain outside the town. A Ghazni map poster records a city with a very long history, arranged around its fortress.
The fortress at the heart of the old town forms the strongest shape on the map, with lanes and courtyard houses closely gathered at its base.
Two medieval minarets stand on open ground away from the centre, a reminder of the time when Ghazni ruled a large empire.
The Kabul–Kandahar road runs in a long straight line along the city, while walled gardens and irrigation channels add a softer pattern to the surrounding plain.
