Glace Bay is a community on the east coast of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, facing the open Atlantic. For much of the twentieth century it was one of the centres of the Cape Breton coalfield, and the mines, many of which reached under the sea, shaped both its economy and its streets. From above, the town is a tight grid of blocks laid out close to the shore.
Glace Bay has another historic distinction. At Table Head, on its edge, Guglielmo Marconi built a station that sent some of the first transatlantic wireless messages in the early 1900s. The Cape Breton Miners' Museum, on the coast just outside the centre, preserves the town's mining history.
A Glace Bay map poster shows a working town beside the sea: rows of streets and former company houses, a small harbour and a rugged coastline. The grid gives the drawing structure, and the ocean edge gives it drama.
The rugged coast forms the eastern edge of the map, with cliffs and small coves facing the open ocean.
Streets run in tight, regular rows through the town. They reflect its growth as a coal community with homes built close to the mines.
A small harbour cuts into the shore near the centre and adds a sheltered inlet to an otherwise open, exposed coastline.

Glace Bay has a proud and close-knit identity, and many people who grew up there now live far away. A map of the town keeps that connection visible, in a simple and honest form.
