Glenrothes was designated in 1948 as one of Scotland's first post-war new towns, planned in the heart of Fife to house workers for a new coal mine. When the mine closed only a few years after opening, the town reinvented itself around industry and electronics, and it became the administrative centre of Fife. Its plan still shows the ideals of mid-century town planning.
Instead of a central grid, Glenrothes is divided into distinct neighbourhood precincts, each with its own curving streets, closes and local centre. Distributor roads and a remarkable number of roundabouts connect them. The River Leven runs along the southern side of town, Riverside Park forms a broad green space near the centre, and the Lomond Hills rise to the north.
A Glenrothes map poster turns this planned landscape into an almost diagrammatic pattern of loops, cul-de-sacs and ring roads. The town is also known for its public art, placed around the streets by a town artist from the late 1960s onward, including concrete hippos that have become local favourites. In black and white, the orderly clusters look like a carefully drawn plan.
Each residential area forms its own self-contained cluster of curved streets and closes. The map has a cellular, clearly organised structure unlike that of older Scottish towns.
Distributor roads meet at many roundabouts, which appear on the map as small rings linking the precincts and give the town plan its characteristic rhythm.
The river and its parkland run along the south of the town in a soft green band. It is the main natural feature within the planned layout.

Aiheā Glenrothes
Glenrothes means a great deal to the families who moved here in its early decades and to the generations who have grown up since. Its planned, looping layout makes a surprisingly graphic print and a thoughtful gift for anyone with roots in Fife.
