Gubin lies on the eastern bank of the Lusatian Neisse, which has marked the border between Poland and Germany since 1945. Until then Gubin and Guben on the western bank were a single town. The river divided it, and the old centre ended up on the Polish side. On a map, the two towns face each other across the water, joined by bridges.
