Gulu lies in the mountainous northeast of Chongqing, a municipality in southwest China known for its steep terrain and deep river valleys. In country like this, flat land is scarce, and towns fit themselves into whatever space the valleys allow. On a map, Gulu's streets follow the ground closely. They bend with the slopes instead of forming a regular grid.
The surrounding hills are cut by small rivers and streams, and roads wind along the valley floors and up the hillsides in tight curves. Farming here has traditionally used terraces carved into the slopes. Settlements tend to be long and narrow, strung out along roads and watercourses. Houses often climb the hillside above the main street.
