Harlesden sits in north-west London, in the Borough of Brent, and from above it reads as a dense patchwork of terraced streets. The roads converge on a small central junction where the Jubilee Clock stands, a Victorian clock tower that has long served as the neighbourhood's meeting point. Around it the grid runs in short, closely packed rows, typical of suburbs that grew quickly once the railways arrived.
Rail shapes this map more than any river does. Willesden Junction lies just to the east, and its fan of tracks cuts a wide pale band across the drawing, with depots and sidings that break the terraces into separate pockets. Further south the Grand Union Canal slips past on its way into central London, a thin continuous line through industrial land.
