Havant lies on the south coast between Portsmouth and Chichester, on low ground at the head of two large natural harbours. The old town centre grew around a crossroads of ancient routes, and its main streets still meet near St Faith's Church. To the north the housing gives way to woodland and rising land. To the south the town opens onto water.
Langstone Harbour and Chichester Harbour form the southern edge, an intricate shoreline of creeks, mudflats and small islands. The road bridge to Hayling Island leaves from Langstone, a small harbourside village with an old mill and pub. Havant was historically known for parchment making, using water from local springs, and was once a significant centre of the trade.
A Havant map poster turns that coastline into its main subject. The straight lines of the A27 and the railway run east to west across the top of the harbours, and below them the land breaks into channels and peninsulas. It is one of the more varied shorelines on the English south coast, and the pattern holds up well in black and white.
At Langstone, the road to Hayling Island crosses the water. It is the only fixed link to the island and sits at the meeting point of the two harbours.
Langstone and Chichester Harbours spread south of town in branching creeks and mudflats, giving the lower half of the map an irregular, detailed edge.
The old town grew where roads from four directions met. The central streets still form a clear cross around St Faith's Church.
