Higashiosaka fills the flat land directly east of Osaka, and on a map the boundary between the two cities is almost invisible. Streets are narrow and closely packed, broken by railway lines running east to west and by elevated expressways. Along the eastern edge the pattern stops sharply where the Ikoma Mountains rise, leaving a green band of slopes and hiking paths.
The city was formed in 1967 by merging Fuse, Kawachi and Hiraoka, and it remains one of Japan's best-known centres of small manufacturing, with thousands of workshops making parts, tools and components. Local firms worked together on a small satellite, Maido 1, launched in 2009, which is still a point of civic pride.
Much of this ground was marsh and river channels until the Yamato River was diverted in the early eighteenth century, opening the land for farming. A Higashiosaka map poster also takes in Hanazono Rugby Stadium, a long-standing home of Japanese rugby that hosted matches at the 2019 Rugby World Cup, and the grounds of Hiraoka Shrine at the foot of the hills.
The mountains form a clean, natural edge on the east, where the dense street grid gives way to forest, winding roads and paths climbing toward the ridge.
Several railway lines cross the city from Osaka toward Nara, drawn as long parallel strokes through the fine mesh of residential and industrial streets.
The rugby stadium and its surrounding park form one of the few large open shapes in the city, easy to spot among the compact blocks.

Aiheā Higashiosaka
Higashiosaka is a place of work and craft, and a map of its streets suits anyone who has worked in its factories, played at Hanazono or grown up in its neighbourhoods. It also pairs naturally with a poster of Osaka itself.
