Hilton Head Island is often described as shaped like a foot or a shoe, lying between Port Royal Sound to the north and Calibogue Sound to the southwest. The Atlantic side is a long, smooth line of beach, while the landward side is ragged with marsh, tidal creeks and inlets. Broad Creek cuts deep into the middle of the island, almost dividing it in two.
The island's development pattern is unusual. Much of it is organised into planned communities known locally as plantations, each with its own gated entrance and internal web of curving roads, cul-de-sacs, lagoons and fairways. On a Hilton Head Island map poster these appear as distinct pockets of looping lines, joined by a few main roads such as William Hilton Parkway and the Cross Island Parkway.
At the southern end, Sea Pines contains Harbour Town, whose striped lighthouse overlooks the marina and the 18th green of Harbour Town Golf Links, home of the PGA Tour's annual RBC Heritage. The island also keeps strict rules on signage and building design, a legacy of developer Charles Fraser's early vision, which keeps it low-key and green from above.
This tidal creek winds from Calibogue Sound deep into the island's centre, spreading into marsh and giving the map a dramatic inland waterway between the north and south ends.
Sea Pines, Palmetto Dunes, Shipyard and other communities each form self-contained networks of curving streets and golf fairways, their shapes easy to pick out from above.
Around twelve miles of beach run along the ocean side in a nearly unbroken arc, a clean line that contrasts with the fragmented marsh edge facing the mainland.

Aiheā Hilton Head Island
Hilton Head is where many families return every summer, where people retire, marry on the beach or play a round they remember for years. A map of the island captures all of that in one distinctive outline, recognisable even without its name.
Mark the year of a wedding, a family reunion or a first trip in the subtitle, and set your own title and coordinates. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, then download HD files for $9 or order a matte print, framed if you like.
