Holubivka lies in the Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine, in the heart of the Donbas coalfield. It was called Kirovsk until 2016, when it was renamed under Ukraine's decommunisation laws. On the map it has no single compact centre. Instead it forms a loose cluster of districts, a pattern common to towns that grew around individual mines rather than one market square.
Streets tend to run in long, straight lines across gently rolling ground. Soviet-era apartment blocks stand near the centre, with rows of private houses further out. Railway lines and industrial sites cut through the town, and open steppe surrounds it, with fields and ravines visible as soon as the streets end.
For many people from the region, the town is now hard or impossible to visit, because it has been outside Ukrainian government control since 2014. A Holubivka map poster offers a way to keep the streets of home in view. It records the neighbourhoods, roads and rail lines exactly as they appear on the map.
Separate districts grew around different pits, so the map shows several clusters linked by roads rather than one dense core, a pattern shared by many Donbas towns.
Railway lines and industrial areas run through the town. They add straight, heavy lines that contrast with the finer grid of residential streets.
Open farmland and shallow ravines surround the town, and the edges of the poster fade into the wide, lightly marked steppe of eastern Ukraine.
