Hongqiao is the seat of Qidong County in the Hengyang area of southern Hunan, not to be confused with the Hongqiao district of Shanghai. The Xiang River, the main waterway of the province, crosses the county on its way north. The landscape around the town is a patchwork of low hills, rice fields and small ponds.

Main roads connect it with Hengyang and neighbouring counties.
