Huatusco sits in the highlands of central Veracruz, on the slopes that rise from the Gulf coast toward the mountains of central Mexico. It is a traditional coffee town, and the surrounding hills are covered with plantations growing beneath shade trees. From above, the town has the grid familiar from Mexican colonial planning, with blocks arranged around a central plaza and a main church.
The grid doesn't extend far before it meets the terrain. Ravines cut into the hillsides around the town, and streets bend or end at their edges.
