Humberstone lies on the eastern side of Leicester in the English Midlands. It began as a separate village, and its old centre is still recognisable on the map as a knot of irregular streets. Around it, twentieth-century housing spreads in curving crescents and cul-de-sacs, the suburban pattern that absorbed the village into the growing city.
The area includes Humberstone Garden Suburb, an early twentieth-century development built by a co-operative society on garden city principles. Its gently curving roads and generous plots stand out from the terraced grids closer to the city centre.
