Injambakkam is laid out along the shore. On the map it forms a narrow band running north to south, with a straight sandy coastline on the east and East Coast Road running parallel a short way inland. Between the two, and west of the road, short residential lanes run off at right angles. The result is a comb-like pattern, and the long edge of the sea keeps it in order.
Injambakkam was once a separate town panchayat. It is now part of Greater Chennai, one of the string of coastal neighbourhoods along ECR south of Neelankarai. It is home to the Cholamandal Artists' Village, founded in the 1960s as a self-run community of painters and sculptors, which is still a well-known part of the city's art scene. Its beachfront also has the amusement park and beach known as VGP.
An Injambakkam map poster captures that shape plainly: the beach as one clean line, the main road beside it, and the tight grid of lanes filling the space between them. Further west, the map begins to pick up the wider suburban spread of south Chennai. The composition is long and linear, pulled into shape by the coast.
The coastline runs almost straight down the eastern edge. It gives the poster a strong vertical boundary, with open sea on one side and dense housing on the other.
ECR is the neighbourhood's spine. It runs parallel to the beach and carries traffic south toward Mahabalipuram, and nearly every local lane joins it.
This artists' colony sits within Injambakkam as a small, distinct patch of the map. It is a community of studios and homes that has been part of Chennai's art world for decades.

Aiheā Injambakkam
People who have lived by the sea in south Chennai, walked the ECR beaches or spent time in the artists' village often want this stretch of coast on the wall. The narrow, shore-bound shape reads well even for people who have never been there, and it stays clearly tied to the place.
