Isla de los Estados lies off the eastern end of Tierra del Fuego, across the Le Maire Strait. From above it is long and narrow, running roughly east to west, with an extraordinary coastline. Deep, fjord-like inlets cut into it from the north and south, so in places the island narrows to thin necks of land. The interior is steep and mountainous, with no roads, and the land drops straight into the sea.
The island was named by Dutch navigators in the early seventeenth century after the States General of the Netherlands. A nineteenth-century lighthouse here, at San Juan de Salvamento, inspired Jules Verne's novel The Lighthouse at the End of the World. Today the island is a protected reserve, with only a small naval presence and no permanent population.
An Isla de los Estados map poster is pure outline, one of the most complex in the collection. It has no settlements and no streets, only fjords, peninsulas, small islands and the Southern Ocean. It is a portrait of the far edge of the continent, where the land is shaped entirely by water and weather.
Long inlets cut far into the island from both coasts. Its outline branches into narrow arms and becomes almost fractal on the poster.
A historic lighthouse site at the eastern end inspired Jules Verne's novel. It sits at the head of a narrow inlet facing the ocean.
The strait separates the island from Tierra del Fuego. It forms the open water at the western edge of the map and has long been a key passage for ships rounding the continent.

Aiheā Isla de los Estados
Isla de los Estados appeals to sailors, readers of Verne and anyone drawn to the far ends of the map. With no settlements to draw, the coastline itself becomes the image, and in Noir or Blueprint it looks almost like an engraving.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with a voyage or a date, and choose from five styles. The $9 download includes six print sizes as 300 DPI PNG and print-ready PDF, with no watermark.
