Te mape
Jalpāiguri sits in the flat plains of northern West Bengal, where rivers coming down from the Himalaya spread out and slow. From above, the town is a dense cluster of lanes gathered around the narrow Karala River, which loops through the centre. The much wider Teesta runs alongside in a pale band of channels and sandbars, and rail lines and highways cut across the fields around it.
The town is the administrative seat of its district and division, and it has long served as a gateway to the Dooars, the belt of tea gardens and forest at the foot of the hills. On a Jalpāiguri map poster, that position shows as a street network that thins quickly into open country, with the river channels doing much of the drawing.
In black and white the contrast is striking: a tight core of small blocks and alleys, a thread of water through its middle, and the sweeping braided bed of the Teesta beside it. It is a map about rivers as much as streets, and the balance between the two gives the composition its character.
A narrow river curls through the heart of town, dividing older neighbourhoods and giving the dense centre a soft, meandering spine that reads clearly even at small print sizes.
The wide Teesta runs close by in a braid of channels and sandbanks. It is a broad pale shape that anchors one side of the map and frames the urban core.
Beyond the built-up area, roads and rail lines head across open plains toward the tea-growing Dooars, so the street grid fades into long, straight lines leading out of the frame.
