Jeddah stretches along the eastern shore of the Red Sea, and its map is noticeably longer than it is wide. Main roads run parallel to the coast for many kilometres, crossed at intervals by wide avenues heading inland. Much of the city is laid out in large, regular blocks, a pattern that reflects its rapid growth during the second half of the twentieth century.
At the centre lies Al-Balad, the historic district of narrow lanes and tall houses built from coral stone, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. Its compact, irregular street pattern stands out sharply from the broad grids around it. To the north, the shoreline is broken by long natural inlets, known locally as sharms, including the creek at Obhur.
For centuries Jeddah has been the main sea gateway for pilgrims travelling to Mecca. Along the Corniche, King Fahd's Fountain rises from the water just offshore. A Jeddah map poster captures a city defined by its coastline, with the old town as a small, dense anchor in a much larger modern plan.
The historic quarter forms a small knot of narrow, winding lanes near the old port, in clear contrast to the wide avenues and large blocks around it.
The seafront road runs for many kilometres along the Red Sea, tracing the coastline and giving the western edge of the map its long, flowing line.
In the north, a narrow inlet reaches inland from the sea, splitting the coast and creating one of the most distinctive shapes on the map.
