Jēkabpils is built on both sides of the Daugava, Latvia’s largest river, in the south-east of the country. From above, the river runs straight through the centre of the town, broad and slightly curving, with islands and sandbanks along its course. The streets on each bank are arranged differently, and a bridge connects them across the water.
The town has two historic halves. Jēkabpils, on the left bank, was granted town rights in the seventeenth century and named after Duke Jacob Kettler of Courland. Krustpils, on the right bank, grew around its medieval castle. The two towns were merged into one in the 1960s, but the map still shows them as separate, each with its own centre and street pattern.
A Jēkabpils map poster places the Daugava at the heart of the design. The river’s wide band divides the frame, and on either side the old grids, parks and residential districts gather along the banks. The river and its two towns make a balanced, symmetrical composition that stands out clearly in black and white.
Latvia’s great river flows through the middle of the town. It creates a broad, open band that divides the map into two distinct halves.
The right-bank district grew around Krustpils Castle, a medieval fortification. It anchors the older street pattern on that side of the river.
Jēkabpils and Krustpils were separate towns until they merged. Each keeps its own core, which gives the map two focal points connected by the bridge.
