From above, Jura is a long diagonal of empty land between Islay and the Scottish mainland. Almost every road sits on the east side. A single-track road leaves the ferry slip at Feolin, rounds the southern end and runs up the east coast through the village of Craighouse. The west has no roads at all, only raised beaches, moorland and the open Atlantic, so the island prints as a dense line of coast around a mostly blank interior.
The most striking feature on the map is Loch Tarbert, a sea loch that reaches in from the west and nearly cuts the island in two at its waist. South of it rise the Paps of Jura, three rounded quartzite hills whose contours stack into tight rings. A Jura map poster shows both together: the deep notch of the loch and the knot of hills beside it, set against the long, calm lines of the Sound of Jura.
Jura is known well beyond Scotland for two things. At Barnhill, a remote farmhouse near the northern tip, George Orwell wrote much of Nineteen Eighty-Four in the late 1940s. Just past that tip lies the Gulf of Corryvreckan, a narrow strait with one of the strongest tidal whirlpools in Europe. Red deer far outnumber the few hundred residents, which explains the quiet of the map.

Three steep quartzite hills in the south of the island. On the map their contours form tight, rounded clusters that stand out from the flatter moorland around them.
The strait between Jura's northern tip and the island of Scarba, where the tide and an underwater pinnacle create a famous whirlpool. On paper it is a thin gap between two coastlines.

Aiheā Jura
Jura suits people who value distance and quiet: walkers who have climbed the Paps, whisky drinkers who crossed over from Islay, and readers drawn by the Orwell connection. Its outline is simple enough to carry a wall on its own, and the empty west coast gives the print generous negative space.
You can set your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, such as the date of a crossing or the name of a cottage. Then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The poster comes as a $9 HD download or as a printed matte poster, with an optional wooden frame.
