Kachkanar is a young town by Urals standards, built from the 1950s around a large mining and processing plant. From above, its plan is clearly modern: regular blocks of apartments, wide streets and a compact centre. To one side lies a reservoir, and to the other the vast terraces of open-pit mines cut into the hills.
The town is named after Mount Kachkanar, which rises nearby and is known for its rock formations and a Buddhist monastery near its summit, an unusual sight in the Urals. The mine extracts iron ore containing vanadium, and the town's life has long been tied to it. Forests and hills surround the settlement.
