Kamsar lies on the Atlantic coast of Guinea, at the mouth of the Rio Nuñez, where mangrove channels and tidal flats meet the sea. On a map, water surrounds much of the town, with winding creeks and wide estuary channels cutting into the land and leaving the settlement on a narrow stretch of higher ground.
Kamsar exists largely because of bauxite, the ore used to produce aluminium. Guinea holds some of the world's largest reserves, and Kamsar is the main export port for ore mined inland. A railway brings the ore to the coast, and the port area, with its loading facilities, stockpiles and long jetty, forms a large, geometric shape on the map.
The residential areas grew around the port and the industrial zone, with planned housing blocks and less regular neighbourhoods next to each other. A Kamsar map poster shows this unusual combination of industry and landscape: straight lines of rail and dock against the branching, organic shapes of the mangrove estuary.
Loading docks, stockpile areas and a long jetty reaching into deep water form the largest geometric shapes on the map, the reason the town exists.
The ore railway approaches the coast in a long, steady line, a clear contrast to the curving creeks around it.
Tidal channels of the Rio Nuñez branch through the land, surrounding the town with fine, organic lines of water.
