Khartoum stands at al-Mogran, the point where the White Nile and the Blue Nile meet and continue north as the Nile. The rivers split the wider urban area into three parts: Khartoum itself to the south, Omdurman to the west and Khartoum North, or Bahri, to the north-east. On a map the confluence is unmistakable, a Y of water with the city built into each arm.
Tuti Island lies right at the junction, long kept as farmland in the middle of the capital. The central streets of Khartoum were laid out at the turn of the twentieth century with diagonal avenues cutting across the grid, a plan often said to echo the Union Jack. Omdurman, older in character, has a looser pattern around its large market.
A Khartoum map poster keeps the rivers at the centre of the composition, as they have been at the centre of the city's life. Bridges cross in thin lines between the three towns, the Blue Nile edges the old government district, and the wide pale water gives the drawing a stillness that holds the dense districts around it together.
The White and Blue Nile join here and turn north, and on the poster the two rivers form a clear Y that divides the metropolitan area into three parts.
An island at the meeting of the rivers, largely agricultural and lightly built, which appears as an open shape surrounded by water in the heart of the metropolitan area.
Central Khartoum's grid is crossed by diagonal streets from its early twentieth-century plan, a geometry that stands out clearly when the map is drawn in black and white.

Aiheā Khartoum
Many Sudanese now live far from Khartoum, and a map of the city can hold the memory of a street, a school or a family home. The confluence alone makes the place recognisable at a glance to anyone who has stood near the rivers.
