Kirando lies on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika in the Rukwa region of western Tanzania. The settlement stretches along the water, with houses and lanes following the shoreline and hills rising behind it. From above, the map is divided almost in half: an irregular band of settlement on one side, and the vast open surface of the lake on the other.
Lake Tanganyika is one of the longest and deepest freshwater lakes in the world, and life here is closely tied to it. Fishing boats, landing places and small markets shape the lakeside, while paths lead inland to farmland on the slopes.
