Kitaibaraki is the northernmost city on the Ibaraki coast, bordering Fukushima Prefecture. It occupies a narrow band of land between the Pacific and the Abukuma highlands. Its settlements follow the shoreline and the valleys of small rivers running down from the hills, and the Joban railway line and coastal roads run through it roughly from north to south.
The city once relied on coal mining in the Joban coalfield. It is known for the Izura coast, where the art critic Okakura Tenshin built a small hexagonal hall, the Rokkakudo, on the rocks above the sea. The hall was washed away by the 2011 tsunami and rebuilt the following year. The area is also known for anko nabe, a monkfish hotpot.
A Kitaibaraki map poster makes the long, indented coastline its main line, with coves and headlands breaking the edge of the land. Inland, roads and the railway run parallel to the shore before giving way to the quiet of the hills. It is an image of a city that has always faced the sea.
The rocky coast at Izura forms a series of small coves and headlands. This jagged edge contrasts with the smoother lines of the roads and railway just inland.
The Joban Line and main roads run close to the coast in long parallel lines. They link the city's districts and give the map a strong north–south axis.
Small rivers descend from the hills to the sea, and settlements cluster along their lower reaches. They form short fingers of streets reaching inland.

Aiheā Kitaibaraki
Kitaibaraki means a lot to people who grew up on its coast and to visitors who came for the sea views and the Rokkakudo. A map poster records the shape of that shoreline in a restrained way that will still look right years from now.
