Kitob lies in the Qashqadaryo region of southern Uzbekistan, a short distance from the historic city of Shahrisabz. The town sits on a fertile plain at the foot of mountain ranges to the east, and its map shows a settlement surrounded by fields, orchards and a dense network of irrigation channels.
The street pattern mixes straight Soviet-era avenues with older, more irregular lanes of courtyard houses, known as mahallas. Rivers flowing down from the mountains are divided into canals and ditches, so fine lines of water run between plots and along roads, giving the countryside around the town a finely stitched appearance.
Kitob is known for its international latitude station, founded in the 1930s as one of a small group of observatories around the world placed on the same line of latitude to study the movement of the Earth's poles. A Kitob map poster shows the town between plain and mountains, measured and watered.
The observatory in Kitob belongs to a historic international network set along the same parallel, making the town a small point of scientific history.
Canals and channels drawn from mountain rivers run between fields and orchards, forming a fine web of lines around the town on the map.
Older neighbourhoods of courtyard houses show as irregular clusters of narrow lanes, set between the straighter avenues of the town's newer districts.
