Ko Chang lies in Trat province, near Thailand's border with Cambodia, and is the country's third-largest island after Phuket and Ko Samui. Most of it falls within Mu Ko Chang National Park, which also covers dozens of smaller islands to the south. Ferries cross from the mainland near Laem Ngop to the island's northeast corner.
The interior is steep and forested, with few roads crossing it, so settlement and linework cling to the edges. One road runs down the west coast past a string of beaches, including White Sand Beach. Another follows the east coast as far as Salak Phet, but the two ends never meet in the south. A Ko Chang map poster shows that open loop around an empty, roadless centre.
The southern coast is cut by long bays, among them Salak Phet, where fishing villages stand partly on stilts over the water. Streams and waterfalls drain the high interior, and the national park protects much of its forest. Offshore, in 1941, French and Thai naval forces fought the Battle of Ko Chang, one episode of the Franco-Thai War.
Roads follow the west and east coasts but stop short of joining in the south. The gap gives the island's map its distinctive unfinished ring.
A long, deep bay cuts into the southeast of the island, lined with fishing villages and mangrove, the most intricate stretch of coastline on the map.
Along the west coast, a sequence of beaches and small settlements strings out along the road, each a slightly denser patch of lanes between the hills and the sea.

Aiheā Ko Chang
Ko Chang is a place where people stay longer than planned, and a map of it holds those weeks well: the beach you kept returning to, the road you rode each day. Its dense, roadless interior inside a ring of roads also makes a well-balanced print.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line with a beach name or travel dates, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Download the HD files for $9, or order a matte print, with an optional wooden frame, from a partner close to home.
