Kodiak Island is the largest island in the Kodiak Archipelago and the second-largest in the United States, after the Island of Hawaiʻi. It sits in the Gulf of Alaska, separated from the Alaska Peninsula by Shelikof Strait. On a map its outline is extraordinary: long, narrow bays penetrate deep into the island from every side, leaving mountainous fingers of land between them.
Most of the island lies within the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, home to the Kodiak brown bear, one of the largest bears in the world. No roads cross that interior. The small road network is concentrated in the north-east, around the city of Kodiak, one of the busiest fishing ports in the country and the site of a large Coast Guard base.
Scattered villages elsewhere on the island are reached by boat or small plane. A Kodiak Island map poster shows this imbalance clearly: a handful of roads clustered in one corner and, everywhere else, a dramatic interplay of water and land, bays and headlands, with smaller islands such as Afognak and Shuyak lying to the north.
Long inlets such as Uyak Bay cut far into the island from the coast, leaving narrow ridges of mountain between them and giving the outline an intricate, branching character.
In the north-east corner the city of Kodiak gathers its harbour, streets and the island's few roads, the only place on the map with any real density.
Along the western side a wide strait separates the island from the Alaska Peninsula, giving the poster a broad expanse of open water beyond the fjords.

Aiheā Kodiak Island
Kodiak posters tend to go to people who have fished its waters, served at the Coast Guard station or travelled out to see the bears. The island's branching coastline is dramatic enough to hold a large wall on its own.
Set a title and subtitle, such as a boat name, a posting or a year, and choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Printed posters ship on matte paper from partners in more than 30 countries.
