Kolonnawa lies just east of central Colombo in Sri Lanka's Western Province, on low ground close to the southern bank of the Kelani River. Its map is a mix of densely built neighbourhoods and wet, open spaces: marshes, remnants of paddy land and drainage canals that thread between the streets. The result is an irregular, patchy composition in which water and land share the frame.
Because the area sits so low, flooding from the Kelani has long been part of local life, and the wetlands around Kolonnawa act as natural storage for heavy monsoon rain. On paper these areas appear as broad empty shapes bordered by winding canals, while roads and lanes squeeze through the drier ground between them in a dense, uneven mesh.
Kolonnawa is also known for its large oil installation, the main fuel storage and distribution facility for the Colombo area, which shows on the map as a distinctive cluster of round tanks. A Kolonnawa map poster captures a landscape shaped by the river, the monsoon and the city's needs, drawn in quiet monochrome lines.
The Kelani River curves along the northern side of the area, its broad bends marking the edge of the map and explaining the low, flood-prone ground nearby.
Marshes and drainage canals thread between the neighbourhoods, leaving open, empty shapes on the poster that contrast with the tightly packed lanes around them.
The Kolonnawa oil installation appears as a cluster of circular storage tanks, an unusual industrial pattern set among the surrounding residential streets.
