Kong lies in the savanna of northern Côte d'Ivoire. For centuries it was an important centre of Dyula trade and Islamic learning, and it gave its name to the Kong Empire that controlled caravan routes in the region. In 1897 the town was destroyed by Samori Ture's forces, and it was later rebuilt on a smaller scale.
The town's Sudano-Sahelian mosques are built of mud brick with protruding wooden beams. They are part of a group in northern Côte d'Ivoire listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021. On a map, Kong appears as a compact grid of lanes and family compounds. A few roads lead out to the villages, and open savanna and farmland surround it.
A Kong map poster uses space as much as line. The dense lanes and compounds of the town form a small, clear shape in a wide, mostly empty landscape. That gives the print a quiet weight and ties a well-known trading town in West African history to its setting.

Narrow passages wind between family compounds and form a dense, irregular grid. It looks very different from the wide open land around it.
Beyond the town, scattered tracks cross farmland and savanna. On the poster this appears as broad open space that frames the compact settlement.
