Koolauloa is the long rural district that runs along the northeastern coast of Oʻahu, roughly from Kaʻaʻawa up toward Kahuku. From above it is mostly a narrow band of settlement squeezed between the mountains and the ocean. Kamehameha Highway traces the shoreline, and small communities are strung along it like beads on a single thread.
Behind the coast rise the fluted cliffs and deep valleys of the Koʻolau Range, whose ridges run down almost to the water in places. On the seaward side, bays, points and fringing reef shape a coastline that changes every few kilometres. Lāʻie, home to Brigham Young University–Hawaii and the Polynesian Cultural Center, forms one of the larger clusters of streets.
Further north the land opens up around Kahuku into flatter ground once given over to sugar cane. A Koolauloa map poster shows how thoroughly geography sets the pattern here: one main road, a scatter of neighbourhoods, mountain valleys feeding streams to the sea, and the Pacific filling one side of the frame.
A single coastal road carries almost all traffic through the district, hugging the shore so closely that on the map it reads as a second coastline running just inside the first.
Steep ridges and deep, narrow valleys descend from the Koʻolau Range toward the sea, their streams cutting short paths across the coastal strip before reaching the reef.
Lāʻie gathers the district's most regular street pattern around the Brigham Young University–Hawaii campus and the Polynesian Cultural Center, a compact grid set against the open shoreline.

People hang this map to remember a stretch of Oʻahu that feels far from Honolulu: a semester in Lāʻie, surf mornings on the north shore, or family land in one of the valleys. The strong line of coast and mountain makes a bold, simple composition.
