Koutiala lies in the Sikasso region of southern Mali, in rolling savanna dotted with fields and trees. It is often called the cotton capital of the country, and the crop has shaped the town for decades: ginning works, warehouses and trucking yards sit alongside the residential quarters, and roads leave the centre toward the farming villages that supply them with each year's harvest.
From above, the town spreads widely and at low density. Blocks are generally large and rectilinear, with wide unpaved streets between walled family compounds, and the grid loosens toward the edges into scattered courtyards and farmland. Main roads leave the centre in several directions, toward neighbouring regional towns and the border with Burkina Faso, giving the plan a set of long spokes.
The countryside around is flat enough that the map is almost entirely about the town's own pattern. A Koutiala map poster records a place that rarely gets drawn at all, a working agricultural centre with the calm, even rhythm of West African savanna towns, and it looks especially good in lighter styles such as Sand, which echo the colour of the local earth.
Large gins and storage yards appear as broad, plain blocks among the residential streets, a sign of the crop that gives Koutiala its identity in Mali.
Rectangular blocks of family compounds line up along wide streets, forming a regular but relaxed grid that thins out gradually into fields at the town edge.
Several main roads leave the centre toward neighbouring towns and the Burkina Faso border, drawing long spokes across the otherwise open savanna.
