Kurobe is a city in eastern Toyama Prefecture, on the Sea of Japan coast. Its map is shaped by the Kurobe River, which leaves the mountains and spreads a wide, fan-shaped plain toward Toyama Bay. Towns and farm villages sit across this fan, linked by roads that radiate over the rice fields, while the land to the south rises sharply into the Northern Alps.
Upstream, the Kurobe Gorge cuts deep into the mountains, and the Kurobe Gorge Railway sets out from Unazuki Onsen, a hot spring town within the city. The river is fed by heavy mountain snowfall, and the fan is known for its abundant spring water. Kurobe is also a major manufacturing base for YKK, the fastener company with roots in Toyama.
A Kurobe-shi map poster captures an unusual composition: a coastline along one edge, a river cutting through, the regular patchwork of paddy fields, and tightening terrain where the valley narrows toward the gorge. It suits travellers who rode the gorge railway, residents of Toyama and anyone who likes maps where mountains and sea meet in one frame.
The Kurobe River spreads its sediments in a broad fan toward the sea, and roads and villages scatter across it in a gently radiating pattern.
The city's seaward edge follows the Sea of Japan shoreline, a smooth, nearly straight line that frames the composition on one side.
Where the river leaves the mountains, the hot spring town of Unazuki fills a narrow valley floor, the gateway to the Kurobe Gorge Railway.

Aiheā Kurobe-shi
Kurobe appeals to people who remember a specific journey: the small gorge train, a stay at Unazuki, cold spring water on the plain. A map holds the whole route from sea to mountains, which makes it a thoughtful travel keepsake.
