Lafayette is the seat of Tippecanoe County in west-central Indiana. The Wabash River defines its map: the city climbs up from the east bank, while West Lafayette, home to Purdue University, spreads over the bluffs on the other side. Several bridges connect the two, and together they form a single urban area divided by the river.
Downtown Lafayette follows a straightforward grid around the county courthouse, a large nineteenth-century building that sits on its own square. Railroads once ran along the riverfront and through the streets, and some of those corridors have since been rerouted. North of the city is the site of the 1811 Battle of Tippecanoe, which gave the county its name.
