Lancaster sits in the Antelope Valley in northern Los Angeles County, on the western edge of the Mojave Desert. The valley floor is almost level, and the city is laid out on a grid of major roads spaced a mile apart. The east-west avenues are named by letter, while the numbered streets running north-south are labelled east or west of a central line.
