Lauda-Königshofen lies in the Tauber valley in northeastern Baden-Württemberg. It was formed in 1975 by merging Lauda, Königshofen and several smaller villages, so on the map it appears as a chain of settlements rather than one centre. The Tauber River runs through all of them, and the town follows its narrow valley floor between wooded and vine-covered slopes.
The valley holds the road and the railway alongside the river, and the three run in parallel through the town. Each former village keeps its own compact core, with lanes that climb short distances up the hillsides. The region is part of Tauberfranken wine country, and vineyards cover many of the south-facing slopes that frame the settlements.
Königshofen is known for its annual fair, one of the oldest in the region, and for the Battle of Königshofen of 1525, fought during the German Peasants' War. A Lauda-Königshofen map poster shows how that history is spread along a valley: several distinct village centres, joined by the long line of the Tauber, with hills rising on both sides.
The Tauber winds through the whole length of the town. On the poster it is the main thread, connecting each former village along the valley floor.
Lauda, Königshofen and the smaller villages each keep a distinct core. The map shows them as separate clusters spaced along the river rather than one continuous city.
Hillsides above the valley are planted with vines and woodland. They form open ground on both sides of the river, giving the town its long, narrow frame.
