Lee's Summit lies southeast of Kansas City, on rolling land that rises between several creek valleys. From above, the old downtown is a small rectilinear grid beside the railway. Around it, later subdivisions spread outward as loops, cul-de-sacs and long arterial roads. Interstate 470 and US 50 cut across the city, and their interchanges stand out as the most geometric shapes on the map.
The town started as a railroad stop in the 1860s. It is named after an early landowner whose surname was later respelled, which is how it became Lee's Summit. The historic downtown still keeps its brick storefront blocks around the tracks, while the city around it has grown into one of the largest suburbs in the Kansas City area.
Water is what gives a Lee's Summit map poster its shape. Longview Lake and Lake Jacomo sit in large parklands to the west and north, and Lake Lotawana lies just beyond the city's eastern edge. Their branching, finger-like outlines contrast with the tidy suburban streets and give the print an organic edge.

Two reservoirs with branching arms sit inside wide, wooded parkland, creating large open areas with intricate shorelines on the western and northern parts of the map.
Where I-470, US 50 and Route 291 meet, the cloverleafs and sweeping ramps form bold, almost sculptural shapes among the suburban streets.
