Leeuwarden is the capital of Friesland, and its map is defined by water. The historic centre is surrounded by a loop of singels, the canals that follow the line of the old fortifications. Their angular zigzag still shows where the bastions once stood. Inside this ring, narrower grachten cut through the old town and divide it into irregular blocks of dense streets.

The Oldehove, a leaning church tower that was never finished, marks the old centre. The city was European Capital of Culture in 2018, and it is linked to two well-known names. The graphic artist M.
