Legnano lies in the upper Olona valley in Lombardy, northwest of Milan. On the map the river runs roughly north to south through the town, and the historic centre follows it. Older streets sit close to the water, while newer districts spread across the level plain on either side. The built-up area merges with neighbouring towns, so the boundaries are more implied than drawn.
The name is known across Italy for the Battle of Legnano in 1176, when the Lombard League defeated Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. The victory is commemorated every year at the Palio di Legnano, a historical parade and horse race between the town's districts. The Italian national anthem also mentions Legnano by name.
In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Legnano became an important centre of the textile and engineering industries, and former factory sites still leave large blocks in the street pattern.
