Les Mureaux lies on the left bank of the Seine in the Yvelines, about forty kilometres west of Paris, directly across the river from Meulan-en-Yvelines. The river is the defining line on any map of the town, sweeping past its northern edge, with a bridge linking the two banks and islands dividing the channel.
Les Mureaux has a long connection with flight. Aircraft were built here in the first half of the twentieth century, and the town remains an important site for the European space industry, where major stages of the Ariane launchers are assembled. From above, the industrial zone forms a large block of broad halls and service roads, very different from the residential streets nearby.
The town grew rapidly in the second half of the twentieth century, and its map combines an older centre near the river with larger housing estates, parks and the rail line toward Paris.
