Levanger lies on the eastern shore of the Trondheimsfjord in Trøndelag, where fertile farmland slopes down to the water. The town centre is a compact grid of streets lined with wooden houses, laid out after a nineteenth-century fire. It is one of Norway's best-preserved wooden town centres.
