Lewis and Harris is a single island despite its double name, the largest in the Outer Hebrides off Scotland's northwest coast. Lewis forms the northern part and Harris the southern, divided by mountains rather than water. From above, Lewis is low and scattered with thousands of small lochs across its peat moorland, while Harris rises into rocky hills cut by long sea lochs.
Stornoway, on the east coast of Lewis, is the main town and ferry port. The Callanish Stones, a prehistoric stone circle on the west side of Lewis, are among the best-known monuments in Scotland. Harris gives its name to Harris Tweed, handwoven by islanders, and its west coast is lined with broad sandy beaches such as Luskentyre.
A Lewis and Harris map poster makes the island's contrast visible. The north is freckled with lochans, the south is folded and steep, and the coastline is broken almost everywhere by sea lochs and inlets. Roads are few and follow the easiest ground, so the landscape itself carries the drawing, from the Butt of Lewis to the Sound of Harris.

The island's main town sits around a natural harbour on the east coast of Lewis. Its streets are the densest built pattern anywhere on the island.
In the south, long sea lochs cut deep into the mountains of Harris. They give this part of the coast a branching, fjord-like outline.

Aiheā Lewis and Harris
Lewis and Harris is hung by islanders, by Gaelic speakers, by people whose families left for Glasgow or Canada, and by anyone who has walked its beaches. The island's full shape makes a strong statement on a wall.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can carry a township, a Gaelic name or a family surname. Paper suits the peat and tweed tones of the islands, and Noir sets the lochs off against a dark Atlantic.
