L'Haÿ-les-Roses lies a few kilometres south of the Paris périphérique, on the plateau above the Bièvre valley in Val-de-Marne. From above it shows the layered texture of the inner suburbs: an old village core with a church and short winding streets, rings of detached houses on small plots, and larger post-war residential blocks set in open ground, with the A6 motorway passing close by.
The name says a great deal. The town is home to the Roseraie du Val-de-Marne, created at the end of the nineteenth century by Jules Gravereaux and often described as the first garden devoted entirely to roses. It holds thousands of varieties, and on a map it appears as a compact, geometric green space with formal paths, a small pattern of order within the suburban streets around it.
This L'Haÿ-les-Roses map poster suits anyone who lived here, studied here or walked the Roseraie in June, when it is at its best. As the sub-prefecture of Val-de-Marne, the town carries administrative weight beyond its size, and a slightly wider frame can take in neighbouring Fresnes, Cachan and Chevilly-Larue to show how tightly Greater Paris is stitched together.
A formal garden of symmetrical beds and paths, drawn as a precise figure among ordinary streets, and the reason the town carries roses in its name.
Around the old church, streets are short, narrow and slightly irregular, the densest part of the map and a trace of the settlement that existed long before the suburbs.
The A6 and its interchanges sweep past on long curves, heavy lines that contrast with the fine residential mesh and tie the town into the Paris road network.
