Linshui lies in the far south of Hebei, west of Handan, where the flat North China Plain begins to rise toward the Taihang Mountains. On a map the town shows a fairly regular pattern of streets and residential blocks, with main roads running out toward neighbouring towns and the land to the west becoming more folded and uneven.
The town is the centre of Handan's Fengfeng Mining District, an area long associated with coal, and industrial sites and worker housing have shaped much of its layout. The wider area is also known for Cizhou ware, the robust painted stoneware that has been produced in this part of Hebei for many centuries.
