Loughborough sits in the Soar valley in northern Leicestershire, and its map is organised by a handful of strong lines. The River Soar and the Loughborough Navigation run along the eastern side of town, the Midland Main Line cuts north to south, and the older market centre lies west of them, with streets converging on the market place.
