Lubny lies in Poltava Oblast in central Ukraine, on the right bank of the Sula River. The town stands on higher ground above the river, and from above you can see the contrast between the street pattern on the upland and the wide, low floodplain along the water. The Sula winds in loops through meadows and wetlands on the eastern side.
Lubny is one of the older towns of the region, with a history that reaches back to the time of Kyivan Rus. Just outside town, on a hill above the Sula, stands the Mhar Monastery, a well-known religious site. The town grew as a trading and administrative centre and later as a railway town.
