Lusaka sits on a high, gently rolling plateau in central Zambia, and its map begins with a straight line: the railway running north to south through the city. Beside it runs Cairo Road, the main commercial street, a long straight axis lined with shops and offices. From this spine the city spreads outward, east toward the government districts and in all directions into widening residential areas.
When Lusaka was chosen as the capital of Northern Rhodesia in the 1930s, it was planned as a garden city. That plan survives in the eastern districts, where Independence Avenue, ministries and embassies sit among curving streets and generous plots. Elsewhere the map is denser and more varied, with planned suburbs, informal settlements and major roads such as the Great East Road leading out of the city.
Lusaka is the capital and largest city of Zambia and one of the fastest-growing cities in southern Africa. Its name is thought to come from Lusaaka, a village headman who lived in the area. A Lusaka map poster shows how a railway settlement became a national capital, from Cairo Road to the edges of the plateau.
The city's main street runs parallel to the railway for several kilometres, a straight commercial axis that anchors the whole map.
East of the centre, curving avenues and large plots reflect the 1930s garden-city plan, with ministries, parliament and embassies set among trees.
One of the main highways out of the city, it leads east past the university toward the international airport and on toward Malawi.
