Malgrat de Mar sits at the northern end of the Maresme coast, where the long run of beach towns north of Barcelona meets the delta of the river Tordera. On a map the town is laid out along the sea, its streets packed between the shoreline and the low green hills behind, with the coastal railway drawn as a firm line just above the beach.
The older centre gathers around a small rise near the coast, where a park now covers the hill once topped by a castle. From there the grid loosens inland into newer housing, campsites and farmland on the flat river plain.
